Where Do We Go From Here?

In 1967 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote his final book entitled: “Where Do We Go From Here” Chaos or Community?

To me that title sets the tone for today’s discussion. This is a conversation between two (possibly three) generations, with varying perspectives about what needs to be done in the community. More importantly, history has positioned us to have different approaches to planning for the future.

Here are a few reasons why we need to have this discussion today. I’m going to first talk broadly, then get specific about Dallas.

In the United States, there are roughly

44 million

African American people in the United States.

There are

2.3 million

African American-owned businesses in the U.S. generating over

$158 billion

in revenues.

Of that number there are 1.1 million female-owned firms that contribute revenue of $44.9 billion in revenue.
